Church School Curriculum

Grades 9-12

September 2006 - May 2007

Theme: The Feasts and Seasons of the Orthodox Liturgical Year

A study of the major feast days and special seasons of the Orthodox Church as experienced through its hymns, iconography, biblical texts, and commemoration of the saints.  Through the historical feasts dedicated to the lives of Jesus Christ and the Theotokos, the Church, in its wisdom, teaches us through icons, hymns, and text the story of God's love for humankind.  Suggested texts for this course include: The Year of Grace of the Lord: A Scriptural and Liturgical Commentary on the Calendar of the Orthodox Church (St. Vladimir's, 2001); and The Incarnate God: The Feasts of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, 2 vols., (St. Vladimir's, 1995).

Theme: Other Religious Traditions

A study of other religious traditions, including Catholicism and various Protestant denominations, and the two other monotheistic, Abrahamic traditions of Judaism and Islam.  The purpose of this course is to acquaint our youth with the religious traditions of others so that we could understand our own tradition better, and be better equipped to be an Orthodox Christian in a religiously and culturally diverse world.
